Academic Advisement
As a graduate student you will be participating in designing your own curriculum. However, each department
has a designated graduate advisor and its own listing of required courses.

Financial Assistance

Information on loans and work-study for graduate students is available. To receive loans or work-study, students
must have a complete financial aid file.

Various Scholarships and grants are available to graduate students. Departments will have additional information
on scholarships and grants offered in specific fields.

Provides assistance finding and securing grants and funds for graduate student research projects.

Applicants for admission to all graduate programs except law, medicine, pharmacy, and management are
processed in the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS). The office also processes applications for admission to
non-degree status for graduate level study. The Dean of Graduate Studies is the college dean for graduate students.
The office has dual functions - serving as an advocate for graduate students, while implementing the
policies established by the Faculty Senate that governs graduate study at UNM. The OGS staff also process all
forms required for academic program completion. OGS manages some state and federal fellowships and all
graduate assistantships.
OGS Special Initiatives Office The Special Initiatives office houses OGS support programs including the New
Mexico Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (NM-AGEP), Peer Mentoring for Graduate
Students of Color (PMGC) and Society of Native American Graduate Students (SNAGS).
Teaching Assistant Resource Center - TARC (277-3344) / (277-3327) http://www.unm.edu/~grad/tarc/tarc.html
TARC offers a course in classroom teaching skills for teaching assistants. One course section is designed for
international teaching assistants. TARC also maintains reading and reference materials pertinent to classroom
teaching and the needs of TAs. TARC is a program of the Office of Support for Effective Teaching (OSET),
which offers additional services to teaching assistants. These include classroom and outcomes assessment consultation
and a teaching awards program.
