Counseling
Counseling & Therapy Services - CATS (277-4537) http://www.unm.edu/~shc1/cats.html, Student Health Ctr.
The purpose of CATS is to provide UNM students with psychological services that will help them function
successfully in their academic lives. CATS provides assessment, referral, crisis and emergency intervention,
brief therapy, and medication services. Brief therapy may include individual, couple or group modalities.
Students in need of extended care are referred to professionals in the community. Common problems that
UNM students bring to CATS include: depression; suicidal behavior; relationship problems; stress management;
sexuality issues including date rape; death and dying issues; anxiety that interferes with successful functioning;
and alcohol/drug problems. Students may make arrangements for services by calling 277-4537, M-F, 8
a.m. to 5 p.m. On Tuesdays, CATS is closed from 8 to 9 a.m. If a student is experiencing an EMERGENCY
(the circumstances are life-threatening), the student may walk in. If a student is experiencing a crisis (a short,
but major disruption in his or her life), the student may come to Walk-in, 1-2 p.m., M-F, for service. Students
using Walk-in are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. For emergencies after hours (past 5 p.m. daily and on

Dental Services (272-4106) Novitski Hall, north campus. The Division of Dental Hygiene provides low-cost
dental services with special discounts to UNM students. Services performed by dental hygiene students under
the direct supervision of faculty include teeth cleanings, x-rays, sealants, periodontal surgery, mouth guards,
and teeth bleaching. Appointments can be made for restorative work by licensed dentists. Appointments are
required and clinic hours vary on weekdays.

Health Education
Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention - COSAP (277-2795) http://www.unm.edu/~cosap/, Mesa Vista
Hall 3059. COSAP offers training and coordination of substance abuse prevention for the campus community.
It also develops and reviews campus policies related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse.
Peer Consulting Services (277-7947) http://www.unm.edu/~peerhelp/, Student Health Center.
Senior and graduate students offer one-on-one support to peers in the areas of fitness, nutrition and smoking
cessation. Peer consultants coach students in healthy lifestyles and access to local resources. Free to all UNM

Peer Education Program (277-7947) Student Health Center.
Student peer educators organize national health-related events, and group presentations on human sexuality,
nutrition/fitness, stress/time management, and alcohol/drug prevention to the UNM community. Credit hours
are available for UNM students interested in a field experience in health promotion/disease prevention.

Insurance - Health and Accident (277-3136) http://www.unm.edu/~shc1/shi.html, Student Health Center.
Students are not required to have health insurance to be seen at the Student Health Center. However, UNM
provides a student-chosen health and accident insurance policy for students enrolled for six or more hours per
semester. The plan provides for hospital, surgical, and outpatient medical care beyond that provided by the
SHC. The policy is geared to the needs of students and provides coverage for a semester or a 12-month period
regardless of geographic location. Dependent and spouse coverage is available. An optional dental plan is
available. An Insurance Specialist at the SHC is available to assist students with insurance claims and issues.
UNM requires all international students and their dependents to have health coverage while enrolled. The
UNM student health and accident insurance policy will meet this requirement.

Licensed massage therapists offer a variety of modalities including deep & therapeutic massage, Swedish,
polarity, cranial sacral, sports, massage stretches, and myofascial release. Students, staff and faculty can schedule
a one-hour session by calling to make an appointment. SHC Insurance Plan A offers limited coverage.

The SHC pharmacy offers prescription service for UNM students, faculty and staff. A valid UNM ID or schedule
is required. Prescriptions from any licensed health practitioner can be filled. The pharmacy stocks most
prescription drugs and can special-order medications within 24 hours that are not routinely stocked. The pharmacy
also provides education and counseling on proper drug use, interactions, and side-effects. The pharmacy
offers many reasonably-priced, over-the-counter items such as orthopedic braces, lotions, sunscreens, cold and
allergy medications, contraceptives, etc. The SHC Pharmacy is a prescription provider for Student Health
Insurance Plan A and many other insurance plans. An insurance card must be shown at the time of service.
Payment can be made by check, cash, debit card, Mastercard, Visa, or by charging to a student account. Hours
are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The pharmacy is closed from 8-9 on Tuesdays. Prescription

Student Health Advisory Committee - SHAC (277-3432) Student Health Center, room 114.
Members make recommendations to SHC administration regarding SHC policies. The Committee consists of
students, student government representatives, faculty & staff.

The Student Health Center (SHC) is a one-stop health service available to all currently enrolled UNM students.
The service is funded in part by student fees. The SHC is located on the main campus just north of Johnson
Center and across the mall from the Student Union Bldg. Services include: primary medical care, walk-in clinic,
pharmacy, women's and men's health, allergy and immunization, medical specialty clinics, physical therapy,
lab and x-ray, travel health clinic, Counseling & Therapy Services (CATS), health education and prevention,
and a student health advisory committee. Students are not required to have health insurance to be seen at the
SHC. Fees charged at the SHC are much lower than community rates. Students enrolled for less than six credit
hours will pay a higher visit fee. Eligibility guidelines change in the summer; call for clarification. The SHC is
an approved provider for Lovelace, Presbyterian, and United Healthcare (UNM plan only). Students enrolled in
HMO plans should check with the SHC Insurance Specialist about choosing the SHC as their primary care
provider. For students who do not have health insurance, the University provides a student-chosen health and
accident insurance policy. Students are encouraged to arrange appointments in advance. Please arrive 15 minutes
early for medical appointments to complete necessary paperwork and to check in at the reception area.
Medical and Counseling and Therapy appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On
Tuesdays, the SHC is closed from 8 to 9 a.m. The SHC is closed on all official UNM holidays. To schedule a
